Thank God for the comment

Thank God for the comment section. Even at the "great" price, I cannot afford to be out $170 to get something that doesn't work. toolness1 and others maybe saved my ass since I can only afford to buy about one gun per year. I've got two. Imagine if this was my third. BLech.

Read the comments, some

Read the comments, some hesitation, but really wanted one. Price overcame the risk. Glad it did. Better than I had hoped for. Did have a small crack, under far end of handguard and easily repairable and not visible. Received rifle in 4 days, to the door! Haven't shot yet but, headspaced nice! Good looking bore. Gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised! If shoots anything like it looks, it'll be a hoot.

Make that +2. Got mine in 1

Make that +2. Got mine in 1 week. Same thing, small crack that I can fix myself in about 30 minutes. Cleaned her up and everything looks good and functions so far. I have not shot the rifle yet, but have all the confidence I need to pull the trigger with either round.

Plus, being that the model is 1916 and 2016 coming up, 100 yr old model that still shoots.

Bought one, had to exchange

Bought one, had to exchange after it fell apart during first cleaning. Second rifle cannot cycle and has been deemed unsafe by three gunsmiths. I'm now out $30 for transfers and I am sending the rifle back for a refund, assuming I get a tag. their website number 1800-xxx-xxxx is not working and out of service, and I have to suggest NOT buying a gun from samco.

I live in FL but I got mine

I live in FL but I got mine in like 4 days. They are in pretty darn good shape for the price, the stocks did have some minor cracking in them as denoted by the ad, but not anything significant I'm worrying about. Sub $200 surplus rifles in this environment are pretty hard to find. Count your blessings IMO.

I have had three dealings

I have had three dealings with SAMCO. Two good, and the purchase of this rifle BAD.

The lugs on the bolt had been peened to correct excessive headspace. It was crazy obvious. The rifle didn't even fall under GOOD condition if you go by the NRA scale.

I emailed them and asked to return/exchange it, because it isn't safe to fire. It barely passes a field gauge even with the peened lugs.

They said "we are sorry and yes you may return it for an exchange"

Then nothing.... So I emailed them and asked them how to return it.

Then nothing...for a week or two.

Then they finally emailed me and said "we will send you a call tag" But they never sent it. So I emailed them to remind them they never sent me a call tag. Every couple weeks I would go back and forth like this, and all I would get is an email asking me "still didn't get it?" Very poor communication and English, to be honest.

The time I called the lady was VERY short and rude with me.

I gave up after 6 months of this.

Just beware, they are at the absolute bottom of the barrel on these.

Thanks for the review, pal.

Thanks for the review, pal. I'm sorry you got screwed, but you did save me from buying one of these. I was saving for a Kel-Tec, a .22lr semi or bolt action (I like bolt action) or maybe a home defense shotgun. When I saw this, I thought, "Hey, this would be great and it's so cheap!" Which made me suspicious enough to read the comment section... I'll keep saving.

I bought one of these years

I bought one of these years ago from Samco. The chamber was oversized, as the first round split the entire length. Have a competant gunsmith check any older gun before firing.

Just this weekend I looked at

Just this weekend I looked at one of these in a gun shop and thought it was a pretty neat little rifle. I would love to buy one, but the description on their site says "Minor cracks," which really makes me reconsider buying one, even for $169.95. For a bit more money, I guess I'd be better off picking up an M48 or an M44.

Mine just arrived on Friday

Mine just arrived on Friday and although I was worried about the "minor cracks" warning, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Not a crack to be seen

Guns & ammo ran an article

Guns & ammo ran an article after they tested one of these. After people expressed concern over the issue of 7.62 vs 308 win SAMCO sent several to HP White laboratories for testing. It took excess of 98,000 pounds per square inch to destroy one of these little carbines. SAAMI max is 55,200 for 308 Win so I think you could safely say these rifles will be ok.

Truck, thanks for the info.

Truck, thanks for the info. Do you have a link to the article? Some documentation on this would put my mind at ease and potentially swing me to buy one...

Edit - I found the article below which references the Guns and Ammo Article from 9/1987.

NOT .308 WIN! Be very careful

NOT .308 WIN! Be very careful with this. This rifle was converted from 7MM to 7.62X51 CETME not Nato, which is a lower pressure round. Unless you reload to lower pressure it may not be safe to fire Nato ammo.

That's not true. The Spanish

That's not true. The Spanish Mausers were checked by an expert, and they are more than capable of handling .308.

Many were rechambered by

Many were rechambered by cutting the breech back (meaning less mass at the front of the chamber) and by inserting a plug in 7.62mm. While they may be adequately strong, eventually, propellant gas erodes solder in the barrel lede and can cut into the throat.

Care to share with us who

Care to share with us who that "expert" is? 7.62 CETME was specifically developed by the Spanish military for these conversions before the adoption of 7.62 Nato ammunition. You don't have to take my word for it, just google it and decide what is the truth.

DGP4, it might be hard for

DGP4, it might be hard for erwos to share with us who that supposed "expert" might be without also revealing that erwos is a shill poster. (Does anyone else suspect that the so-called "expert" in question is, much like erwos, on SAMCO's payroll?)

Is everybody that disagrees

Is everybody that disagrees with you a "shill poster"? This is your standard label that you've applied to me and several others, especially in the VZ-58 thread. Did you even check out the link to the article about the high pressure testing? Now that you've been proven wrong (again), will you please shut up and stop giving bad advice?

Thanks Shy. My point was to

Thanks Shy. My point was to warn people that these rifles were originally chambered in a lower pressure 7MM caliber and they need to be careful using much higher pressure .308 commercial ammo. I was not saying they will blow up. As noted by another commentator, headspace problems with these rifles is a big issue since they do not have matching bolts. All I am saying is be careful which applies to any military surplus guns.

It in the history of these

It in the history of these rifles that the conversion was not nato 308 but the lower pressure Cetme. I doubt & hope these are not stamped 308 win. These are by no means K98 Mausers!

I had sent (and returned)

I had sent (and returned) THREE M1916 Spanish Mausers from SAMCO, for one problem or another.
Wouldn't buy another rifle from this company!

rifle did not pass headspace

rifle did not pass headspace check with a no-go and field gage.
Was returned to samco for new bolt, Samco cooperated by paying shipping and promising to return original purchased rifle that I had refinished stock and install flash protector.
Awaiting return now.

I purchased a 1916 a few

I purchased a 1916 a few weeks back. It was at my door in a week. I inspected the gun and found an issue with the safety, the gun wouldn't fire when the safety was on but when it was moved to 'off' the firing pin engaged. It may have just needed a cleaning, but I was concerned. I contacted Samco and they immediately replied with a free UPS return packing slip and an apology for the inconvenience. A+ customer service in my mind. Shipping was $25. box included a sling and cap. Mismatched #s but wood and bore looked good.
