These were $699 in the fall when 10 round mags were not available. Now SGM 10 round mags can be purchased. Centerfire previously gouged the price all they way up to $1199. I suspect that they are clearing these short barrel slant cut models out. This isn't the best version and isn't a 5 star deal, but I got impatient and bought one. YMMV

Well bit the bullet, and pulled the trigger on this....bought one today. The LGS had one for 1250 and wouldn't budge on the price. I told them to match the price and i'd pay cash, and the money would stay locally....NOPE. I told them I'd order it online for 899, and have it transfered through their shop, and they told me go for it?? I left and promptly ordered from Kelly at centerfiresystems. It'll be here at the end of the week, and I have a ton of ammo for it as I'm a mosin nut too.
So after all is said and done, centerfire made 899, I'm happy and eagerly waiting for my new Vepr, and my LGS will be 15 bucks richer after I pay them their transfer fee and walk out the door with my Vepr.
Thanks Centerfire and LOL at my LGS.

Thanks for the post - I saw
Thanks for the post - I saw this deal the other day, and it was tempting. I'm currently looking at this rifle as a viable (and less expensive than a .308 rifle ammo-wise) long-range (>300 yards) platform. However, given this purpose, I'm guessing that at least a 20" barrel would be prudent.
Does anyone have any insight into the VEPR's accuracy at say 500y and on out? While the 7.62x54r is a powerful round, it has one heck of a kick, and in turn, requires a fairly sturdy and heavy rifle. Plus, as I understand it, the VEPR is built off an AK platform, which is not really known for its accuracy.
Given these trade-offs, it would only make sense (for me anyways) to consider this as a longer range rifle, since a traditional AK-47 or AR-15 would both be lighter and better suited for the 100-300y range.

This gun is sturdy with a 1.6mm RPK type heavy receiver. I trust its durability. I see the negatives to this version as follows: 1. short barrel, maybe a bit too short. 20-23" would be ideal in my mind. 2. Short sight radius. 3. slant cut receiver. With all of those things said, I bought this version as a carbine length big fireball shooter to have fun. I most likely won't use it past 100 yards. I will hold out for a reasonably priced 23" square cut receiver with type 01 sights for greater distance shooting. I think each configuration has its own place in my safe. You can buy 54r ammo in the 18-20 cents per round range, including shipping. 10 round mags are about $45 shipped. 54r is the only full-power cartridge that remains economical to shoot routinely (right now).

I bought one of the 20" barrel versions last fall. As a lover of the Kalashnikov platform, this gun holds a special place in my heart. You just did yourself a huge favor. While others bemoan the high cost and lack of availability of ammo, you can spend all day at the range or the ranch and not feel guilty about it. Good call!

Could also look at the AK54r as well. http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ak5...
I don't have either but I could see these guns gaining popularity as a way to shoot the inexpensive 7.62x54r as an alternative to the more costly 7.62x51 NATO. I would agree that I could see these as longer range guns that you're actually able to use more often due to the cheaper ammo.
One possible downside to the
One possible downside to the AK54r is that it uses PSL mags. Most of the PSL mags I've seen will cost you $60-80, which is considerably more than the 10rd VEPR mags.
16" might actually do well for precision on the Kalashnikov platform when compared to a 20-24" barrel, considering how thin the barrels are across all the models. Plus awesome fireballs.
