I seldom see the Lifestraw

I seldom see the Lifestraw for around $15. I bought two at this price, and they went into my emergency prep.

Since so many people are recommending Sawyer, I'll check those out, too.

A logical item to own imo.

A logical item to own imo. Just look at whats happening with the infrastructure of the US water system Flint etc.. Only a matter of time before the pipes fail. Its not like the water is clean anyway right. Either way its good to have a few for shtf. I also like the Sawyer mini. Remember you can dillute bleach in water if your in a pinch to purify water.

I wholeheartedly agree with

I wholeheartedly agree with uscrob. The price of the Sawyer mini was just $14.95 here several days ago, it periodically drops to that price here. I have used both and the Sawyer is more durable, lasts longer and I have more confidence in it. I liked the Sawyer regular size one so much that I bought the Sawyer-mini when I saw it because it saves weight and size while hiking. If you got the UV Steripen, then you are ready for drinking the worst water in the entire globe. But you only need the Sawyer if you're staying in the U.S. I keep one in my bug out bag because you can never have too much ammo or water.

Lifestraw was a great concept

Lifestraw was a great concept originally and I love what the company does with donating its product around the world, however now a much better option is available: the Sawyer Mini. It filters to .1 micron (half that of the lifestraw), filters 100,000 gallons (the Lifestraw filters 250), and actually costs less than the Lifestraw ( - If the link doesn't work, just amazon it, it's currently $18.51 with free shipping from one of the sellers online.

I own and have used both the Lifestraw and Sawyer Mini and the Sawyer wins in a landslide.

If you are willing to invest more money, check out the Sawyer Point Zero Two which filters down to .02 micron (small enough to remove even viruses from your water). It's currently $115.99 and includes free shipping (

While bacteria measure in the 0.3–8 micron range, viruses are a full magnitude smaller measuring in the 25–300 nanometre (nm) (0.025–0.3 micron) range. Thus, a 0.4 micron wide by 1.5 micron long V. cholerae bacterium is about 55 times as long and 15 times as wide as a 27 nm (0.027 micron) diameter Norwalk virus.

Most people argue that you only need a .2 micron filtration level in North America as you generally only have to remove larger bacteria and protozoa from water rather than viruses like in poorer areas around the world. I contend that should the grid ever fail in the US, people will resort to bathing, etc. in local streams and rivers. After a number of desperate/less educated individuals inevitably defecate in, or close to the water, it will host common viruses (Hep. A, Rotavirus, Norwalk Virus, Adenovirus, etc.) as well.

The Sawyer Point Zero Two filters up to 1,000,000 gallons (you just use the included syringe to backwash (as opposed to Lifestraw where you blow through the opposite end) to keep it running smoothly.

I use the sawyer mini for backpacking, etc. and the point zero two is attached to a 5 gallon bucket (everything needed to attach it is included) for any grid down event.

Again, I loved Lifestraw when it first came out, but Sawyer now offers an unbelievably better product at a lower price.
